LEWISTON, Idaho (AP) — Idaho residents will need to punch in 10 digits to complete calls starting Aug. 5 as the state prepares to implement its second area code.

The Lewiston Tribune reports seven-digit calls to local landlines will continue to go through until the change is final. Area code 986 will be introduced a month after the Aug. 5 deadline.

The Idaho Public Utilities Commission said in a news release that next year, callers who do not include an area code will hear a message advising them to hang up, dial again and include the area code. New numbers will get the 986 area code. No existing numbers will change.
