‘Arrested Development’ Season 4: Movie Confirmed By New Episode Format?

Arrested Development Season 4 Movie Netflix
EW

Ever since ‘Arrested Development‘s final FOX episode “Development Arrested” hit the airwaves in 2006, fans have clamored for the movie teased in meta by executive producer and narrator Ron Howard. The dream of a revival will soon be achieved with Netflix’s upcoming ‘Arrested Development’ season 4 reunion, but new comments from show-runner Mitch Hurwitz seem to confirm the build toward a movie, albeit at the expense of a full character reunion. Find out the big changes to ‘Arrested Development’ season 4 and the new movie talk inside!

‘Arrested Development’ may have finally been revived from its near-decade slumber, but series creator Mitch Hurwitz stresses that Netflix’s upcoming 13-14 episode revival season won’t be exactly as you remember it. “The show will look very different,” says Hurwitz to USA Today, assembling a “very, very complex puzzle” of scenes shot over the year from the prolific stars’ difficult and varying availabilities.

We’d known for some time that each episode of the ‘Arrested Development’ reunion would center on a specific character, but for the first time Hurwitz confirmed that none of the episodes would feature the ‘Arrested Development’ cast in its entirety. Instead, Hurwitz confirmed that a full reunion would be reserved for the imminent movie!

The bigger story is the family has fallen apart at the start of our show. They all went their own way, without Michael holding them together, so they’re left to their own devices, and they’re not the most successful devices. [Season 4 is the] first act to what we eventually want to do, which is a big movie.

No plans for a movie have been finalized by either Netflix or any studio, but Hurwitz stressed that the revival season intentionally builds toward one. “It was such a joy to be back with everybody; it didn’t feel like work, it felt like being back with friends,” says the show-runner. “You don’t see them all together until you see the movie, [but] I can assure you that the characters are just as damaged, self-involved and self-righteous as ever.”

Regardless of movie plans, ‘Arrested Development’ season 4 features appearances from Conan O’Brien and Andy Richter, ‘Parks and Recreation‘s’ Ben Schwartz, ‘Up All Night’s’ Chris Diamantopoulos, all three stars of Comedy Central’s ‘Workaholics,’ ‘Mad Men’s’ John Slattery, Isla Fisher and Terry Crews, as well as returning series players Carl Weathers, Jeff Garlin, Liza Minnelli, Judy Greer, Henry Winkler and Scott Baio. Oh, and series star Michael Cera (George Michael Bluth) has officially joined the writing staff, for the record.

What say you? Are you excited enough by Netflix’s ‘Arrested Development’ season 4 reunion, or will you not be satisfied until the full-length movie? We’ll keep you posted when Netflix issues an official premiere date, but in the meantime give us your thoughts in the comments!
