According to skincancer.com, an estimated 10,130 people will die of melanoma in 2016 and 1 in 5 Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer.

Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers. The FDA claims that sunscreen will only prevent sunburns and will not reduce the risk of skin cancer and early skin aging but most doctors disagree and urge their patients to use sunscreen at an early age.
As temperatures in the Magic Valley increase make sure you are protecting yourself and your kids from the sun with protective clothing and sunscreen. We think of sunscreen as being pretty simple, but there is a lot you should know about the uses of sunscreen:

  • Make sure your sunscreen is broad-spectrum protection and is SPF 30 or higher.
  • Use only water resistant sunscreen
  • Use at least 1 ounce of sunscreen on all body parts that are not covered by protective clothing.
  • Apply your sunscreen 15 minutes before going outside and re-apply every 2 hours
  • Creams are best for dry skin and the face.
  • Gels are good for hairy areas, such as the scalp or male chest.
  • Sticks are good to use around the eyes.
  • Your sunscreen should last for three years. After three years you will need to discard it and purchase new.
