Aussie Cricket Fans Set World ‘Beer Snake’ Record

A Sydney Cricket Grounds (SCG) security guard is being hailed as a hero after helping bored patrons set a new world record for ‘largest beer snake’ during a rain-delayed cricket match Sunday, January 20, 2013.

The entry for ‘Beer snake‘ in Wikipedia was quickly edited praising the anonymous security guard saying, “A glorious security guard liaised with police officers to ensure the safe passage of a smaller beer snake from one side of the sight screen to the other, thereby joining the two nascent snakes into a behemoth.”

A beer snake, according to Wikipedia, “is the stacking of numerous plastic beer cups to form a ‘snake.’ [They] are most commonly found at sporting events that are played out over many hours, such as cricket.”

The SCG snake stretched the entire length of one side of the stadium. As fans held the approximately 330 foot snake aloft triumphantly, the SCG scoreboard trumpeted the new world mark, which eclipsed a previous record snake that was assembled during the World Cricket Championships in 2007.

The beer snake was one of the few joyous moments in an otherwise glum evening for the little over 22,000 fans in attendance, many of whom waited through a two-hour rain delay only for the match to be abandoned.

Americans have never paid much heed to the mostly European and Australian sport of cricket, but, guys, there are muthahumping beer snakes on that muthahumping playing field! AND, beer’s involved! You have our attention now, Aussies. Well played.
