Avalanche Danger High Near Sun Valley

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (AP) — Officials with the National Weather Service have issued an avalanche warning for central Idaho's Sun Valley region, warning that both natural and human-triggered avalanches are likely.

The Times-News reports the warning will remain in effect until further notice for the Sawtooth, western Smoky and Soldier Mountains as well as for alpine terrain near Galena Summit. Officials with the National Weather Service and Sawtooth Avalanche Center warn that people should avoid traveling in avalanche terrain, and that backcountry skiers, snowboards, snowmobilers and other recreationists should be wary of sloping terrain and avoid avalanche path run out areas.

The weather service says all should use extreme caution. NWS meteorologist Mike Huston says snowfall and strong variable winds have overloaded weak layers in the snowpack, increasing the danger.
