‘Batman vs. Superman’ Set Photos Show Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne as More Plot Details Emerge

We’ve already seen our fair share of ‘Batman vs. Superman‘ set photos showing off Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot, but we now have our first look at Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne! And he looks like … Ben Affleck! With some grey in his hair! Yeah, thats not too surprising. After all, the ruggedly handsome Affleck already looks enough like a playboy millionaire and the little bit of grey just confirms what director Zack Snyder has already said: this will be an older, more tired Batman.
However, with the arrival of these images comes some really interesting story details that suggest this take on Batman will be even different than we were expecting.
According to a report over at Badass Digest (who also broke those ‘Star Wars: Episode 7‘ story details awhile back), this Batman isn’t just older — he’s been doing his whole superhero schtick for close to three decades! Even more interesting is that he’s apparently been doing it from the shadows and is still very much an urban legend. Apparently, it takes the arrival of Superman to bring him into the spotlight.
The super spoiler-averse may want to avoid this next paragraph. These are the full relevant details:
My sources indicate that when BvS opens Batman has existed for close to thirty years, which would place Wayne in his 50s (which is why I expected more grey in Affleck’s hair). In this version Batman is still an urban legend, a creature of the night, and no one has ever taken his picture. But he’s had plenty of adventures, and the Batcave includes a memorial centered around a tattered Robin costume.
I’ve heard more, but I’m wary of crossing the line into spoilers. I do quite like this little tidbit, though, because it gives us a sense of a very different Batman than we’ve ever seen in the movies. This sets Affleck’s version apart from Bale and the others easily – he’s a quieter operator, not involved in blockbuster battles but in all sorts of badass vigilantism.
The suggestion that many of the iconic Batman stories have already happened prior to the events of ‘Batman vs. Superman’ is fascinating. It lends the character the necessary weight and gravitas to be Batman without having to wade through an origin story all over again. It also trusts the audience to put two and two together regarding this particular Batman’s history. We dig it!
If it’s true. You know how it is with movie rumors: always have your salt on hand.
On one final note, those images above feature Affleck’s Bruce Wayne examining the rubble of a destroyed Wayne Financial building in Metropolis. Could ‘Batman vs. Superman’ open right after ‘Man of Steel’ and feature Wayne surveying the damage done to the city after Superman’s battle with Zod? It sure seems likely!
‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ is currently set to open on May 6, 2016.
