BELLEVUE, Idaho (AP) — A councilman-elect in the central Idaho city of Bellevue will not be sworn in as he says he was not seeking office.

The Idaho Mountain Express reports that Tyler Peterson threw his hat in the ring for the Bellevue City Council but then became extremely busy and failed to remove his name from the candidate list by the Sept. 18 deadline. Peterson said he was not seeking election, but won the seat with 82 votes.

At a City Council meeting Monday, the city treasurer read a letter from Peterson thanking those who voted for him, but criticizing whoever mailed a flyer to constituents asking them to vote for him. The City Council will be charged in January with selecting a council member for the empty seat.
