SANDPOINT, Idaho (AP) — Bonner County commissioners in northern Idaho have unanimously adopted a resolution calling on Congress to designate the Scotchman Peaks area a wilderness.

The Bonner County Daily Bee reports (http://bit.ly/18X61pR) that the resolution adopted Tuesday states that the area offers outstanding views, recreation opportunities, and contributes to the economic vitality of the region.

The resolution also says the area provides habitat for a diverse array of native plants and animals.

The commission normally opposes wilderness designations.

But Commission Chairman Cary Kelly says the Scotchman Peaks area is the exception to the rule.

The 7,009-foot Scotchman Peak is the highest point in Bonner County.
