BOISE, Idaho (AP) — The Boise State athletic department is adding women's sand volleyball beginning next spring. Athletic Director Mark Coyle said Thursday the indoor volleyball coach, Shawn Garus, will coach the team, which will likely be made up of members of the indoor volleyball team.

Garus says the additional competition in the spring will help improve the volleyball program. Boise State is the 38th NCAA program to sponsor sand volleyball and is the seventh to announce it will begin next spring. Others are Arizona, Arizona State, Cal Poly, UC Irvine, LSU and South Carolina.

It is the 12th women's sport at Boise State. Sand volleyball is played with two players on each side. College matches consist of five games. Garus played on the AVP beach volleyball tour on and off from 1995-2007.
