BURLEY, Idaho (AP) — A Burley man is going to trial on charges that he harmed an infant he was babysitting so severely that the child may never walk or care for himself. Michael L. Carnes has pleaded not guilty to felony charges of injury to a child and aggravated battery causing bodily harm.

The Times-News reports the 21-year-old Carnes' trial has been set for Jan. 8. Carnes was babysitting the 5-month-old boy on March 20, when the child sustained a skull fracture, bleeding on the brain and bruising on his legs and buttocks.

Police say Carnes told them the infant hit his head on a bed frame while his diaper was being changed. A doctor concluded the bed could not have caused all the injuries or the extent of the injuries.
