BOISE (KTVB) -- A Caldwell man indicted for dumping hundreds of tires on federal land in Owyhee County made his first court appearance today.

Terry Dorton Anderson, 49, is charged with two counts of felony injury to government land, according to U.S. Attorney Wendy J. Olson.

He was indicted last week by a federal grand jury in Boise. The indictment alleges that between July and December 2012, Anderson dumped around 500 junk tires in Squaw Creek Canyon near Highway south of Marsing, and another 400 tires by a dirt road off Highway 78.

The canyon is about 1,700 feet deep. The lands where the dumping occurred is administered by the Bureau of Land Management.

The estimated cost to remove the tires from Squaw Creek Canyon, clean up, and rehabilitate the area is between $32,049 and $56,649.

The estimated cost to remove the tires dumped of Highway 78 and clean up the area is between $7,156 and $13,027.

Each felony charge is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000.

Anderson is scheduled to stand trial on Nov. 10, 2014.
