CALDWELL (KTVB) -- A Caldwell teenager is using his experience battling childhood cancer to help others. Kyle Bratton was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma when he was just 13 years old.

His Make-A-Wish trip inspired him to give back and he was recently honored for those efforts.

The 18-year-old loves spending time outside, especially if it involves caring for his 25-head of cattle.

"A lot of the recent ones were named after nurses I had in the hospital," said Bratton.

The teenager's nurses made a big impact during his time in the hospital battling cancer. It was a difficult time spent inside at St. Luke's Hospital.

Bratton was fighting for his life.

"It started in a lymph gland just a little bit above the heart," said Bratton of the cancer that was found in his body. "I was in the hospital, didn't have a lot of pleasant things to think about. Then one of the nurses came to me and said so, where are you going for your Make-A-Wish trip?"

The foundation sent him to Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and Sea World. It was a chance for Bratton to escape the hospital, and constant thoughts about cancer.

"I can't even describe the feeling. It was amazing," said Bratton.

So amazing, it inspired him to help other sick kids by raising money for Make-A-Wish trips.

"They'd done me a very, very big favor and I'd accumulated a massive debt with them," he said.

But he didn't want to just ask people for money.

"So, I decided to commit one of my best bulls that I had. I syndicated him which is a lot like selling shares in a company and I sold him at the Gem State Classic," Bratton said

In all, Bratton raised $20,000 dollars with the bull, aptly named Wish Granter.

Bratton's efforts haven't gone unnoticed. He recently won a $1,000 dollar Kohl's scholarship for college after being nominated by a family member. The 18-year-old will attend Treasure Valley Community College in the fall. Eventually, he plans to study echo cardiology, inspired by his time in treatment.

"One of the first tests that I did was an echocardiogram," Bratton said.

No matter where he ends up, Bratton says raising cattle and helping others will always be a part of his future.

"I'd like to just give every little bit I can here and there for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. I've still got a debt to pay," he said.

The teen next hopes to plan a charity golf tournament to raise funds for Make-A-Wish trips.
