Watch The Solar Eclipse in Twin Falls With A Pinhole Viewer

Brad already talked about the dangers of staring directly at the sun, so how are you supposed to watch the partial solar eclipse today? We’re all going back to the 2nd grade on this one and making a Pinhole Viewer.

The idea is simple: the light from the sun is filtered through a pinhole in a piece of paper allowing you to safely view the moon’s transition across the face of the sun.

A Pinhole Viewer is a really simple and really cool way to experience the eclipse. Here’s what you’ll need:

A piece of cardboard, or thick paper
A piece of tinfoil
A needle
And some tape.

This is really easy. Take your flat piece of cardboard and cut a square in the middle. Tape your piece of tinfoil over the hole you just cut. Poke a hole in the tinfoil with the needle and you’re done. You now have a Pinhole Viewer.

You’ll have to adjust how far you hold the pinhole from the ground, or other surface to create the image The size of the needle hole is important as well: too small and it will be dim but sharp; too big and it can be blurry. Experiment and remember to take pictures!

The results won’t be spectacular with this method, but remember it’s an experience just being in a solar eclipse. Throw a barbeque or just get your family together. The best pictures of the eclipse will be online later tonight anyway.

Fatal Motorcycle Crash Near Richfield

On May 19, 2012, at approximately 3:51 p.m., the Idaho State Police investigated a fatal crash involving a motorcycle and semi truck near milepost 186 on US26, just east of Richland, ID in Lincoln County. Jan Boline, 43, of Idaho Falls, was traveling westbound on a 2003 black Honda motorcycle when she lost control of the motorcycle, crossed into the opposite lane of travel and collided with a semi. Goran Mandura, 46, of Twin Falls, who was traveling eastbound in a 2007 Freightliner tried to avoid the motorcycle but was unable to. Boline who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced deceased upon impact. It is unknown if any other factors contributed to the crash. Lincoln County deputies and emergency personnel were on scene to assist with the crash. Next of kin have been notified and the crash is still under investigation.

Body Found In Burley Hotel Crawlspace

A man’s body has been discovered in the crawlspace of a Burley hotel. The Cassia County Sheriff’s Office’s has been investigating an incident at the Alpine Garden Motel after two employees went missing.

KTVB reports that 55 year old James Ambrose, and 54 year old Russ Taft were last seen on May 4th, 2012. According to the sheriff’s office, Ambrose stole a car from the motel and was spotted in the Las Vegas area last week. Ambrose is currently wanted on a $250,000 warrant for grand theft. Investigators believe Taft may be the victim of a violent crime.

The body discovered under the motel has yet to be identified. The family has yet to be notified and an autopsy will be conducted on Monday to determine the exact cause of death.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the Cassia County Sheriff’s Office at (208) 878-2252.

Coin Toss to Break Election Tie

Twin Falls, Idaho (KLIX) Two people running for Twin Falls Precinct 8 tied in Tuesday’s Primary Elections. Therefore, the Twin Falls County Clerk will hold a coin toss to break the tie next week. Republicans Thomas Lowther and Don Zuck tied with 75 votes. The coin toss is set for Tuesday May 22 at 1:30pm in the Twin Falls County Court house, 3rd floor.

Boys Sentenced for Setting Cop Cars Ablaze

KETCHUM, Idaho (AP) – Three Blaine County boys who pleaded guilty to setting fire to two police vehicles parked in front of officers’ homes in Hailey in December 2010 have been sentenced in Juvenile Court. The Idaho Mountain Express reports detention sentences while the third received 45 days because of prior misdemeanor convictions. All were placed on probation for three years, ordered to perform 100 hours of community service, pay
$589 in restitution and maintain a B average in school.
Prosecuting attorney Jim Thomas said the crimes could have been considered terrorism and if the suspects had been 18 instead of 16, they would have been prosecuted federally. He said he recommended lighter sentences because the boys had accepted responsibility and changed their attitudes.

Man Charged for Machete Attack

KIMBERLY, Idaho (AP) – Magic Valley officials are investigating an apparent machete attack on a 52-year-old man. Court records say 38-year-old Martin Hernandez-Vargas of Visalia, Calif., was charged Tuesday with aggravated battery for the weekend attack south of Kimberly. Bail was set at $250,000. Twin Falls County deputies received reports of a disturbance and responded to a vehicle crash south Sunday. Court records say officers found a machete with blood and hair on the blade on the floorboard of a pickup truck they believe Hernandez-Vargas crashed. At about the same time, officers found the victim with traumatic head and face injuries at his nearby residence. He was hospitalized. Deputies say Hernandez-Vargas told them the victim began making unwanted sexual advances after the two drank beer. Hernandez-Vargas also is charged with DUI.

Judge Signs Death Warrant for Inmate

BOISE — A 7th District Judge has signed a death warrant for condemned inmate Richard Albert Leavitt, ordering that he be executed by lethal injection. Barring any last-minute court intervention, Leavitt will be executed on June 12. Leavitt was convicted in the July 18, 1984 brutal murder of 31-year-old Danette Elg in Blackfoot. Prosecutors said he stabbed her repeatedly with exceptional force, and then cut out her sexual organs either as she died or shortly thereafter. Leavitt’s defense attorneys have argued he had ineffective counsel during his trial, and he has brain damage and a mental disorder that contributed to his actions. The U.S. Supreme Court declined to consider Leavitt’s appeal on Monday, and Judge Jon Shindurling signed the death warrant Thursday.

Jerome City Begins Budget Process

Jerome, Idaho (KLIX) Many cities across the Magic Valley are beginning the budget process. The city of Jerome is currently working on theirs. Right now department heads are putting together their individual budgets. The new City Administrator Polly Hulsey says staff will have about a week to get their requests in. It will be a few weeks before the city knows the outlook for the budget for next fiscal year.

2012 Relay for Life Kicks Off in MV

Filer, Idaho (KLIX) Hundreds are set to take over the Filer Fair Grounds to fight cancer. The 2012 Relay for Life kicks off this evening at 4pm. The opening ceremonies will start later in the afternoon. According to the Relay for Life website more than seven hundred people are signed up to participate. There are 67 teams and a little more than $128,000 has been raised. money raised goes into cancer research and ultimately save lives. Many cancer survivors participate in the annual event. Others remember and honor loved ones who may have died because of cancer. The Twin Falls Relay for Life Continues on into Saturday.

Whooping Cough Warning for Idaho

NAMPA, Idaho (AP) – Health officials in Idaho are encouraging residents to get vaccinated against pertussis – also called whooping cough – as neighboring Washington state struggles with its worst outbreak of the disease in decades. Southwest District Health spokeswoman Laurie Boston told the Idaho Press-Tribune that the disease doesn’t know state boundary lines, and it’s extremely important for people to be vaccinated and get booster shots against the disease. Idaho has had 31 cases of whooping cough between January and April of this year, including one infant in eastern Idaho who died of the disease. The state had 32 cases last year during the same time period. In 2010, the state tallied 43 cases between January and April.

Fox TV Programming to End in Magic Valley

Twin Falls, Idaho (KLIX) The Simpsons, American Idol and NFL Football may not be seen in the Magic Valley this summer. That’s because Fox network programing will end July first on affiliate KXTF Fox 35.

General Manager Shelley Goings says the network and her station couldn’t come to a new contract agreement. It will expire June 1^st.

It’s unclear how Fox programing will be seen in the Magic Valley. According to Goings KXTF will not go off the air, but may offer other programing. The GM says the network is demanding compensation that exceeds the affiliate’s revenue. The two tried to negotiate but Goings says the network wouldn’t budge.

Cattle Prod, Small Ax, and Garden Tool Just Some of What TSA Takes Away

Boise, Idaho (KTVB) Many Magic Valley residents fly out of the Boise Airport and they take a lot with them, whether it be toothpaste, combs’ and other toiletries. But, believe it or not people have tried to take a cattle prod on board a plane at the airport.

KTVB got an exclusive look at some of the scary and simply strange items Boise Airport passengers have tried to take on board planes. The Transportation Security Administration saved some of the items passengers had to abandon because they were not allowed in their carry-on baggage.

One out of every one hundred passengers who’s flown since 9-11 has had with them some type of prohibited item that couldn’t go onto into a plane cabin. As you’d imagine, that’s a lot of stuff, and with all of the safety restrictions, there’s some interesting stuff in people’s pockets and carry-ons.

In the last six weeks, TSA officers have found a lot of unusual things in carry-ons and pockets. Those items included all of these things: switchblades, Swiss army knives, pocketknives, multitools, cattle prod, clips, slingshot, small ax, bottle openers and corkscrews, gardening tools, small saws, decorative saw blade, baton, pool cue, purse with brass knuckles, and a small gun keychain.

Many of the prohibited items the TSA collected were simple pocket tools, like a BSU corkscrew and bottle opener.

Novelty items can also be stopped at security, like the decorative saw blade, toy gun keychain, and the purse with a weapons theme that has a handle designed to look like brass knuckles.

Some rules may seem over-the-top, but to the TSA, anything that even looks like a threat might not just present danger, it could make your seat-mate defensive, or simply uncomfortable.

In the last year, Boise TSA officers have collected around 700 pounds of prohibited items. Most were small knives or prohibited liquids, but they also found nine guns.

Just last month, TSA found a loaded gun in a man’s carry-on by running the bag through the x-ray machine. Boise Police ticketed him, took his gun, and destroyed the ammo.

Most of the time, bringing a prohibited item is an honest mistake, and passengers just hand over their prohibited item, no problem, no punishment.

Parents May Have To Pay For All Day Kindergarten At Twin Falls School

A Twin Falls elementary school is considering all day kindergarten for the Fall. Parents however, will have to pay for it. The principal at I.B. Perrine Elementary proposed the idea to parents. Parents would have to pay a little more than $200 dollars a month for the all-day kindergarten classes. Some scholarships may be available. A minimum of 18 students would need to be signed up for the all-day program. There has been some interest by parents. This is not the first time all-day kindergarten has been proposed.

As Expected, Idaho Voter Turnout Was Down

Technically it was a good election, but disappointing in turnout according to Secretary of State Ben Ysursa. The lowest percentage of registered voters in Idaho’s history showed up to the polls Tuesday. Just 23 percent of registered voters cast a ballot during the first ever closed Republican primary. That means Tuesday’s election brought fewer Idaho voters to the polls than the state’s previous record low of 25 percent, which happened in the 1988 May primary election featuring Republican candidate George H.W. Bush running against Democratic candidate Michael Dukakis. There’s differing opinions on why this year’s number dropped. While it’s commonly known that candidates and issues drive elections, Ysursa believes the low numbers of this election point to the closed Republican primary. Statewide 179,489 of the roughly 750,000 registered voters went to the polls. Ada County, the state’s largest pool of registered voters, had one of the lowest turnouts at 16.74 percent. Clark County, located in rural eastern Idaho, had a nearly 70 percent turnout. In the Magic Valley, Cassia County saw nearly 50 percent turnout of voters. Franklin and Bear Lake counties also had about 50 percent participation. Despite a contested sheriff’s race, Blaine County had a turnout of about 13 percent The Idaho Republican Party and its Executive Director Jonathan Parker has a different outlook. He says he believes it actually has more to do that we didn’t have a presidential election on the ballot. And there were other races not on the ballot as well such as the U.S. Senate and state officials. If the closed primary played a role in the turnout, Parker says it was only a very small one.

GOP Rep. Phil Hart Loses Re-election Bid

KTVB – A tax-protesting northern Idaho Republican representative has lost in his four-way primary. Rep. Phil Hart was defeated by challenger Ed Morse in Kootenai County’s District 2 race. Morse faces Democrat Dan English in November. Hart has been fighting the state and federal government over hundreds of thousands in unpaid income taxes. He’s written a book that challenges the legality of income taxes and has been a regular sponsor of bills seeking to allow Idaho residents to make payments in gold and silver. A four-term lawmaker, Hart has also acknowledged taking state-owned timber he didn’t pay for in the mid-1990s to build his home in Athol. Morse, a Hayden, Idaho real-estate appraiser, raised $16,500 to Hart’s roughly $6,000 total ahead of the primary election.

Big West Woos Boise State

Big West Conference members say they will consider being a home for Boise State’s non-football athletic programs. Commissioner Dennis Farrell told The Idaho Statesman conference officials are willing to consider Broncos sports teams not invited to follow the Bronco football team’s march to the Big East Conference next year. Big West officials sent Boise State membership information Monday. Boise State must make a decision by June 30 on its interest in the Big West. Boise State Athletic Director Mark Coyle said he’s monitoring the changing conference landscape and considering all options. Under Big West rules, Boise State would need votes from eight of 10 board of directors to join.
Big West membership for 2013 includes schools such as San Diego State, Hawaii, Long Beach State and UC Davis.
