HAYDEN, Idaho (AP) — Police in northern Idaho say a 7-year-old boy has been shot in the head after two unsupervised children played with a handgun and it discharged.

The Kootenai County Sheriff's Office says deputies responded at about 7 a.m. Saturday to the Midtown Mobile Park in Hayden. Police say the boy was struck by a small caliber bullet.

He was taken to Kootenai Health in Coeur d'Alene and then transferred to Sacred Heart Medical Center and Children's Hospital in Spokane, Washington. A hospital spokeswoman on Sunday said he was listed in critical but stable condition.

The sheriff's office didn't release details about which child was holding the gun when it fired. Names haven't been released.
