‘Cliffhanger’ is Being Rebooted For No Discernable Reason

Cliffhanger Reboot
Columbia/Tri-Star

Following in the footsteps of the upcoming ‘Point Break‘ remake, ‘Cliffhanger’ is now getting the reboot treatment from ‘Fast and Furious’ producer Neal Moritz. Hollywood seems to have moved on from remaking horror classics, so perhaps now they’re turning to action movies.

This news comes from Deadline, and they mention that screenwriter Joe Gazzam is writing the film, though no director or stars are currently attached. Deadline also points out the reboot would join two other movies about mountain climbing that are in development, which is odd — perhaps Hollywood is anticipating that the world is about to have mountain climbing fever. The original was co-written and starred Sylvester Stallone, and was one of his better action movies of that period. As the original had an older character who piloted a helicopter, we’d bet they’ll offer a similar role to Stallone.

The original film — which is fun, though it peaks during an amazing opening sequence — was at its best when it showed people actually climbing mountains. We saw it in the theater, and the image of Sylvester Stallone hanging off the side of a large cliff was vertigo-inducing, and something that couldn’t be faked. And though the ‘Cliffhanger’ redo might be just as jaw dropping in 3D (we’d put the odds on the remake being in 3D at even money), hopefully it will make a point to include lots of practical stunts.
