E!’s The Soup, or its previous iteration has long run as a staple of pop culture commentary, but it seems Joel McHale might be out of a job once more. The network has decided to send back The Soup after 22 seasons and 12 years of McHale as host, effectively ending the franchise, at least for the moment.

The Hollywood Reporter first declared the news, specifically that McHale’s tenure would end with the series itself on December 18. As part of lead-up to the final show, McHale will use the preceding weeks to reflect on some of the franchise’s biggest moments. Said E! of the decision:

We are incredibly proud of the long-running success of The Soup. [The show] has delivered countless laughs and unforgettable episodes, and we are grateful to the talented team’s fearless wit and clever approach week after week. Joel took the show to new heights for more than a decade, and his irreverent humor and unique brand of comedy as captured so perfectly on The Soup will be missed.

First introduced as Talk Soup in 1991 under Greg Kinnear, the show has featured a variety of other hosts over the years, including John Henson, Hal Sparks and Aisha Tyler, before re-branding in 2004 as The Soup with McHale.

Well, had The Soup gotten cold, or is another bowl somewhere in our future?
