Education Legislation enters Idaho Legislature

BOISE, Idaho (AP)-A Senate committee has agreed to debate a series of bills intended to roll back the power the teacher unions have in brokering multi-year agreements with school boards and fighting salary cuts. The Senate Education Committee voted along party lines Monday to introduce four new bills being pushed by the Idaho School Boards Association.

Some of the details may look familiar to the Students Come First laws that were repealed at the ballot box in November. One bill would put a one-year limit on the provisions in the broad contract agreements negotiated between the union and school board. Those so-called master agreements can include salaries, teacher duties and other factors. Another bill would repeal a state law that prevents teacher salaries from being reduced from one year to the next.
