BOISE, Idaho (AP) — An overpass spanning a busy section of U.S. Interstate 84 west of Boise was damaged by an excavator being hauled on a trailer that cracked a girder. One lane of the Galloway Road Overpass between Sand Hollow and Purple Sage roads was closed after the incident Monday.

Idaho Transportation Department inspection crews recommended the lane be closed and all remaining bridge traffic kept to the undamaged half of the overpass. Dan Bryant, the highway agency's maintenance manager in southwestern Idaho, says the precaution was taken because the agency can't take changes with the safety of those traveling on and underneath the structure.

He says it's still possible engineers will determine a further weight restriction is necessary. Temporary signals — and a 15-foot width restriction — are in place for drivers.
