SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Society for the Study of Evolution is holding an international conference on evolution at Snowbird resort in the mountains east of Salt Lake City. More than 1,400 scientists and others will discuss scientific discoveries and advances in biological research. The conference kicks off Friday and goes through Tuesday.

The society will award its Stephen Jay Gould Prize to a science educator at the University of California Museum of Paleontology at Berkeley. Judith Scotchmoor has been recognized many times for her efforts to promote an understanding of human evolution.

She received a Friend of Darwin Award from the National Center for Science Education. Scotchmoor will deliver an opening lecture at 8 p.m. Friday at the Cliff Lodge at Snowbird on "Keeping Science as the Centerpiece: Lessons learned."
