IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (AP) — Tossing bread to geese or other waterfowl in Idaho Falls will soon come with the potential of a fine up to $100. The Post Register reports that the Idaho Falls City Council on Thursday approved an ordinance making it a crime to feed the birds within city limits.

The ordinance takes effect within 10 days. The move comes two weeks after the council approved a $3,000 contract with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services to trap and transport waterfowl about 100 miles away from the city's greenbelt.

The city is also embarking on a public education campaign letting residents know feeding waterfowl can harm their health, cause delayed migration and lead to overpopulation. The city also says feeding waterfowl increases the city's cost to manage them.
