BOISE, Idaho (KTVB) -- Flu season is in full swing and Idaho is now listed among 43 states experiencing widespread flu activity.

Experts say it's tough to predict when the flu season could peak, but there are ways to protect yourself. On Monday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released the latest flu surveillance report. It shows that a high level of influenza-like illnesses have been reported in the Gem State. The Centers for Disease Control is reporting a high level of influenza activity across Idaho.

The situation has escalated in the last month.  Plus, doctors say this year's flu vaccine isn't as effective because the virus mutated after the shot was produced. Doctors say people should still get a flu shot. Also, Wash your hands often, use hand sanitizer as well. If you have to cough, use the crook of your arm or your t-shirt to block the spread of germs. Flu experts say this season is still ramping up and it could be a bad one.

If you experience a fever, chills, aches, or the sudden onset of any flu-like symptoms, it's best to stay home from work or school if you can. The flu season usually peaks somewhere between now and the end of February, but it's extremely hard to predict when that could happen.
