BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Jerry Conley, the longest-serving director of Idaho’s Department of Fish and Game has died. He was 71. Conley led the agency from 1980 through 1996 before leaving for Missouri to oversee the Conservation Department in his native state. The Idaho Statesman reports Conley died Oct. 5 after a long battle with brain cancer. During his tenure in Idaho, Conley oversaw the department at a time when two conservation officers were killed and the state engaged in standoff with the Nez Perce tribe over fishing treaties. He also led the introduction of wild turkeys and the nongame income tax checkoff. He was also instrumental in starting Citizens Against Poaching. The family has planned a memorial service in Boise Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Rockies.
