Recently we saw Paul Giamatti stomping New York streets in a larger-than-life turn in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2,’ so we looked forward to seeing the ‘Sideways’ actor go a little smaller by taking a role on television with his announced FX pilot ‘Hoke.’ Now, it seems the cable network has officially opted to pass on the Miami-set 1980′s detective drama, sadly putting ‘Hoke’ closer to “hoax.”

Featuring Giamatti in the title role of a mid-life crisis enduring detective named Hoke Mosley, the series was described as a darkly comedic drama based on author Charles Willeford’s novel series, ‘Sideswipe,’ ‘New Hope for the Dead’ and ‘The Way We Die Now.’ The crisis notwithstanding, Hoke Moseley didn’t let his possible insanity stop him from nosing around hard-boiled murders in the 1985 Miami scene.

In addition to Giamatti’s title role and executive producer credit, ‘Hoke’ was to feature actors Robert Wisdom, Tammy Blanchard and John Carroll Lynch. The project was also written, directed and executive produced by Scott Frank, having been produced in-house with FX. Of the three drama pilots ordered over the last year, including ‘The Strain‘ and ‘Tyrant,’ ‘Hoke’ is the only one not to go to series.

Well, what say you? Does ‘Hoke’ sound too hokey to have made it, or is FX crazy to let Paul Giamatti’s detective drama go?
