ELBA, Idaho (KLIX) – Crews are still battling the Grape Creek Fire, which was 60 percent contained as of early Wednesday afternoon. Acreage burned remains at about 1,580 acres.

“The Type 3 incident management team and the fire crews have done a great job on this fire,” Minidoka District Ranger Loren Poppert said in a prepared statement. “We appreciate their hard work to contain it safely.”

Firefighters are concerned about predicted winds as well as warming and drying conditions, according to information from the Sawtooth National Forest, which could cause the blaze to grow and more visible smoke.

Crews are looking ahead over the next several days, however, and plan to downsize by the weekend. Currently, 131 personnel are fighting the fire that started last Thursday about 5 miles southwest of Elba, including five hand crews, six engines and three helicopters.

Closures remain in effect on lands in the Independence Lakes area south of National Forest System Road No. 548, including Independence Lakes Trail. More information will be posted as it becomes available.
