Hailey residents to consider plastic bag ban

Students from Hailey collected enough signatures to get a citywide ban on November's ballot. The Idaho Mountain Express reports Wood River High School's environmental club members want people to use reusable bags or recycled paper bags. A bag manufacturer, Hilex Poly Co., with a plant in nearby Jerome, Idaho, opposes such bans, contending its facilities use up to 30 percent recycled content. Worldwide, efforts to ban or discourage plastic bags have met with mixed success. Hailey's proposal would slap retailers who ignore the ban with a $50 daily fine.
