HBO’s ‘The Missionary’: Cold War Drama with ‘Vampire Hunter,’ ‘Breaking Bad’ Star Not Moving Forward

HBO The Missionary Benjamin Walker Jesse Plemons Pilot Pass
HBO / AMC

Well, this is a bit of a bummer. Late last year we were tracking development of an intriguing new HBO Cold War drama that had initially eyedBreaking Bad”s Aaron Paul for the leading role, dubbed ‘The Missionary.’ The role went to ‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter‘ star Benjamin Walker, though ‘Breaking Bad’s Jesse Plemons signed on for a supporting role, with the show to be produced by Mark Wahlberg. Has the project officially gone cold?

According to Deadline, HBO has officially decided to past on the pilot, having greenlit the inaugural episode back in June of 2012. Set in Berlin during the late 1960s, ‘The Missionary’ centered on a young American missionary (Walker) who becomes involved with the CIA, helping a young woman escape the city.  Plemons was to portray Sherwood Elbridge, a young Coca-Cola executive who aids Walker’s character in smuggling defectors out of the Eastern Bloc of Berlin

The project was written by Charles Randolph (‘The Interpreter’), directed by Baltasar Kormakur, and produced by Stephen Levinson, author Malcolm Gladwell and frequent Levinson collaborator Wahlberg. ‘The Missionary’ would have marked the second HBO period drama alongside ‘Boardwalk Empire.’

We’d certainly have been interested to see what ‘The Missionary’ could bring to HBO, especially with such upcoming names to the roles, but oh well. For now, we’ll go back to being terrified of Jesse Plemons in the final two ‘Breaking Bad’ episodes, which themselves were presumably extended in length for more creepy Todd action!
