Helicopter Crashes in East Idaho Family’s Back Yard

Gord Horne, ThinkStock

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (AP) — An eastern Idaho man attempting to take off in a helicopter from his backyard with his wife and daughter aboard lost control and crashed.

The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office says pilot Dave Hansen and his family were able to get out of the helicopter and didn’t require medical attention following the backyard crash at about 8 p.m. Monday.

Allen Kenitzer of the Federal Aviation Administration says preliminary information indicates the MD-500N lost power on takeoff and crashed into trees.

He says the craft sustained substantial damage in the crash about 5 miles south of Idaho Falls.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
