only seven other countries celebrate something akin to our holiday

You may be disappointed to learn only seven other countries celebrate something akin to our holiday.  Canada’s feast takes place in October, having been moved back one month by edict 60 years ago.  Otherwise, the two days are nearly indistinguishable.  Many people around the world can’t tell the difference anyway between us and our neighbor to the north (don’t tell that to a Canadian).

You can read about some of these celebrations here.  Some are based in religious faith and others reflect labor conditions or independence movements.

Now, pass the mashed potatoes and gravy!
