Idaho and Northwest Brace for Triple Digit Weekend

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — The Inland Northwest is bracing for some record heat this weekend at the same time that it hosts two of its biggest sports competitions.

The Hoopfest basketball tournament typically draws 200,000 people to Spokane's downtown core next Saturday and Sunday. Meanwhile, the annual Ironman triathlon is scheduled for nearby Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, on Sunday.

The National Weather Service is forecasting a high of 104 degrees in Spokane on Sunday. Event organizers are bracing for health problems such as dehydration, cramps, sunburn, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Hoopfest, billed as the largest 3-on-3 basketball tournament in the world, has ordered cool-air misters and fans for this weekend. Organizers plan to have extra water for court monitors, who usually spend six to seven hours on the asphalt courts..
