BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A legislative committee studying the pros and cons of a state takeover of federal lands in Idaho discussed for the first time what their recommendation should look like before sending them to the governor's desk.

Committee chairman and state Sen. Chuck Winder says up until Tuesday, the bipartisan committee had held a variety of educational and testimonial meetings to gather as much information about a state takeover. The committee expected to finalize its report Tuesday but held off after members spent nearly two hours discussing what to put in their final recommendation.

Perhaps the biggest change the panel agreed to, however, is that Idaho should no longer demand that the federal government give back its public lands immediately. Instead, the committee is now stressing a collaborative approach.
