Idaho Drivers Warned of Wandering Elk Herd

ROBERTS, Idaho (AP) — Authorities in southeastern Idaho are warning motorists to be alert because of a wandering herd of about 100 elk on both sides of Interstate 15 near Roberts.

Steve Schmidt of the Idaho Department of Fish and Game says one elk has been hit on the interstate as the herd has strayed from its usual migration route.

Schmidt tells the Post Register (http://www.postregister.com/node/68796) that the elk typically winter east of Hamer but were likely disturbed by hunters and continued moving southwest.

Most of the elk are on private property within view of the interstate.

Schmidt says hunters need permission to hunt on private property and that shooting from roadways is illegal.

Schmidt is asking sightseers to stay away so the elk can find a path out of the area.
