Idaho Farmers Say Big Game Ruining Their Fields

BURLEY, Idaho (AP) — Organic farmers in south-central Idaho say deer and elk are spreading noxious weeds and taking cropland out of production.

The Times-News reports that farmers in Cassia County say wildlife are eating noxious weeds such as morning glory and leaving seeds in their droppings on cultivated lands.

A public meeting to discuss the problem is set for Tuesday at the Cassia County Courthouse. Idaho Fish and Game officials are scheduled to take part.

Organic farmer Cleve Smith of Sublett calls the problem catastrophic. Officials say organic farmers have to take ground out of the program while weeds are eradicated, and then have to wait three years before they can use the land again.
