BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A 25-year-old man using a makeshift surfboard made of plywood attached by a rope to a diversion dam in southwest Idaho appears to have drowned when his foot tangled in the rope.

The Ada County Sheriff's Office says the man remained submerged for about 10 to 15 minutes Monday evening in the New York Canal in southern Ada County.

Authorities say a passer-by pulled him to shore. Emergency responders called just before 6:30 p.m. attempted to revive the man but failed.

He was pronounced dead at an area hospital. His name hasn't been released.

Officials say the water is about 20 to 25 feet deep in the area.

The sheriff's office says canals are private property and canal companies don't permit swimming or playing in them.
