LAS VEGAS -- An advocacy group is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to take up a challenge to Nevada's ban on same sex marriage. The Idaho-based Coalition for the Protection of Marriage on Wednesday asked the nation's highest court to reach down and bypass an expected appeal by the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco.

Lambda is a gay rights advocacy organization. It vowed to appeal a federal judge's ruling last week that Nevada has a legitimate state interest in prohibiting recognition of same-sex couples. The coalition wants the Supreme Court to go ahead and decide if the U.S. Constitution requires that the legal definition of marriage be changed from a man and a woman to the union of any two persons.
