BOISE, Idaho (AP) — An Idaho Senate panel is backing a proposal to allow people within city limits to carry concealed weapons without a permit.

Republican Sen. Curt McKenzie, of Nampa, introduced the measure in the Senate State Affairs Committee on Wednesday. McKenzie says the bill is intended to make conceal carry laws consistent in both cities and counties. The Legislature passed a bill last year that clarified concealed carry laws outside city limits.

According to the proposal, previous restrictions blocking certain criminals, felons and mentally ill people from carrying concealed weapons would still be in place. Meanwhile, the Idaho Sheriffs Association hasn't issued an opinion on the measure yet.
