CALDWELL, Idaho (AP) — Police in southwestern Idaho have arrested a man suspected of abducting his 16-month-old son from the child's mother in Hayward, Calif. Police say Walfre Waldemar Perez was arrested Sunday in Caldwell and the child was found safe.

The child was taken early Saturday morning from his mother, who has legal custody. Perez used a phone in Idaho at about 10 p.m. Saturday. Caldwell police located his vehicle in a trailer park on Sunday. Officers saw a man get into the car with a child and stopped the vehicle.

Officers took custody of the boy and arrested Perez on a felony abduction warrant. He was jailed in Canyon County awaiting extradition to California. A Hayward police officer planned to fly to Idaho to return the child to his mother.
