MAYFIELD, Idaho (AP) — Ranchers east of Boise say they're still not happy with Idaho's attempts to control the elk herds that threaten their livelihoods. Idaho Department of Fish and Game officials assert they've been trying to fix the problem by meeting with residents and monitoring elk numbers. The department is also in the process of hiring a biologist who will work closely with Mayfield residents who have complaints about the herds. But the ranchers said that's not good enough to keep elk from wintering on their land and eating up all the forage. They also argued elk numbers are much higher than what's reflected in Fish and Game's official counts. Wildfires and wolves were pointed to as a contributor in driving the animals out from their traditional grounds.
