According to a new report, Idaho's suicide rate in 2009 was the fourth highest in the nation. According to the American Association of Suicidology. Idaho's suicide rate was 19.7 per 100,000 people in 2009 -- or 304 suicides. The national average was 12 per 100,000. Idaho went up in the rankings from 2008, when it had the sixth highest rate in the country. Kathie Garrett, chair of the council for suicide prevention says Idaho consistently ranks in the top 10 states for our suicide rate, but the ranking of four is higher than we've experienced." The council is one of the groups trying to re-establish an Idaho suicide prevention hotline. Idaho's hotline closed in 2006, mostly because of the lack of funding.
