BOISE (KTVB) -- The Idaho Senate has spiked a broad tax plan backed by House Republican leadership.

The bill would have eliminated sales tax on groceries, lowered income taxes for high-income earners, and increased the fuel tax by seven cents.

However, Senate Majority Leader Bart Davis told the chamber Tuesday that the proposal did not have enough support to survive the chamber.

Davis made the announcement after caucusing behind closed doors with Republican members for more than an hour.

Earlier that day, a legislative panel endorsed sending the proposal to the Senate floor, but didn't attach a do-pass recommendation.

Idaho leaders still have time to submit a new proposal that would address tax cuts and transportation funding, but an alternative proposal had not yet been pitched as of Tuesday.
