IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (AP) — The Idaho Falls City Council is considering scrapping an ordinance that requires runoff elections for mayor and council seats.

The Post Register reports that the city requires a runoff election when a candidate in a general election race fails to get more than 50 percent of the vote. Some say runoff elections are too costly and turnout for them is low.

The requirement has been in place since 2005, but 2013 was the first time a runoff election was conducted. The city says that runoff race cost the city at least $29,000.
