Idaho Trooper Cleared in Shooting of Man Who Pulled Gun

Benito Baeza

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho (AP) — Officials in northern Idaho found an Idaho State Police trooper was justified in shooting a 26-year-old Montana man who grabbed a gun while officers were questioning him during a welfare check on Lookout Pass in June.

Shoshone County Prosecuting Attorney Keisha Oxendine said Kootenai County investigators found Alexander Mandarino of Whitefish, Mont., posed an immediate and continuing danger to Trooper Todd McDevitt and Shoshone County Deputy Adam Durflinger as the three struggled over the gun.

McDevitt fired his gun and Mandarino died of a single gunshot wound to the chest. An Idaho Transportation Department worker sought the welfare check on June 12 after seeing a car parked at a turnout about 2 miles west of the Montana-Idaho border. Officers questioned Mandarino for about 45 minutes before he grabbed the gun.
