Idaho Woman Gets 1½ Year Term for California Egg Donor Fraud

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The owner of a Los Angeles-area egg donation and surrogacy agency who ripped off clients, donors and attorneys has been sentenced to a year and a half in federal prison.

Federal prosecutors said Allison Layton of Star, Idaho was sentenced Monday for wire fraud. Layton owned Miracles Egg Donation in suburban Glendora. Authorities say between 2008 and 2012 she took money from would-be parents to pay for certain costs related to surrogacy and egg donation but instead spent it on herself, including a $60,000 wedding.

Prosecutors say more than 40 people, including egg donors, surrogates and intended parents, lost more than $270,000. A restitution hearing has been scheduled next month. Layton must also serve three years of supervised release after serving prison time.
