Idaho Woman who Cut Babies Throat Set for Release

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A 70-year-old woman nearing the end of a 15-year prison term for cutting a Boise girl's throat has been granted medical parole.

Rae Ann Leach had been scheduled for release on June 27, but the Idaho Commission of Pardons and Parole granted her medical parole on Thursday. Executive director Olivia Craven tells the Idaho Statesman that Leach won't be released for at least a month.

Craven says Leach will have to take part in a program to help her adjust to life outside of prison and will have to develop a plan that ensures the community will be protected. She plans to move to Sisters, Ore. Leach pleaded guilty to aggravated battery for cutting the throat of a 20-month-old neighbor during a psychotic episode in July 1995. Her husband said it happened because of a medication change.
