Idaho’s Other August Sky Event: Perseid Meteor Shower Hits Peak This Saturday

The upcoming total solar eclipse over Idaho on August 21 is getting all the press, but there's another sky event happening right now. And, it reaches its peak this weekend.

The Perseid Meteor Shower is already underway, but its been hard to see anything thanks to smoke from area wildfires. According to Space.com, the height of this year's Perseid Meteor Shower will be this Saturday around 11 am our time. I'll state the obvious by saying that middle of the day isn't the best meteor viewing time. The astronomy teacher I never had for the class I never took would have been proud.

Space.com recommends that you try to see the meteor shower Friday and Saturday night instead of squinting through the Idaho midday sun.

The American Meteor Society also has some great Perseid viewing tips. I'd love to join that society since I'm betting their membership patches would rock. I have a spot on my denim jacket that it would fit great on.
