Increased Police Presence for Labor Day

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — With Labor Day approaching, the Idaho Transportation Department is warning drivers that law enforcement will be out in force, on the lookout for people who drink before climbing behind the steering wheel.

Not only Idaho State Police, but local law enforcement agencies will be increasing patrols during the holiday weekend, a period when there are often higher numbers of alcohol-related accidents. Kevin Bechan, with ITD's Office of Highway Safety, says people who know they're going to be celebrating a fond farewell to summer should plan ahead.

They should designate a driver who isn't drinking or arrange alternative transportation. Another important reminder: If people see a friend or family member reaching for the keys after drinking, Bechan says they should speak up rather than let that person become another sobering statistic.
