Baylor’s Isaiah Austin Diagnosed with Career-Ending Genetic Disorder

Former Baylor superstar center and NBA prospect Isaiah Austin was diagnosed with a career-ending genetic disorder this week.

Austin announced he has been diagnosed with Marfan syndrome, a genetic disorder that affects the body’s connective tissue. Often the disorder can weaken the aorta, the artery that supplies blood from the heart to the rest of the body. Doctors recommended Austin stop playing basketball immediately.

“They told me that my arteries in my heart are enlarged and that if I overwork myself or push too hard that my heart could rupture,” Austin told ESPN. “The draft is four days away and I had a dream that my name was going to be called.”

Despite the diagnosis and his battle with blindness in his right eye from a previous, unrelated accident, Austin remains faithful.
