LEWISTON, Idaho (AP) — The Lewiston Police chief says two officers will be disciplined after they were injured when one accidentally fired his gun in the department's basement.

The Lewiston Tribune reports that Chief Christopher Ankeny says the officers violated the department's firearms safety procedures by failing to use an indoor bullet trap while unloading their weapons. But he refused to offer details about the discipline or release the names of the officers involved.

The gunshot injured the hands of both officers after a training session for the force's SWAT team on Oct. 21.

The bullet trap is a small metal box designed to contain a bullet during an accidental discharge. A department news release says that the investigation revealed that it's common practice for officers not to use the trap.
