‘Magic City’ Series Finale: Starz Cancels After Two Seasons

Magic City Canceled Starz Series Finale

The magic has finally run out. Much like its other acclaimed, but low-rated two-season drama ‘Boss,’ premium cable network Starz has officially opted not to renew its 1960s Jeffrey Dean Morgan crime drama ‘Magic City.’ The second season, and ultimately series finale will air this coming Friday night.

“We are tremendously proud of the series and everyone involved,” Starz said in a statement over the cancellation, via Deadline. “From the writers, to the cast and crew, it has been an incredible collaboration. This was a story born from Mitch Glazer’s singular vision of Miami, the Magic City of his childhood, and we are grateful to him for bringing it to life on Starz. The season’s story arc will allow us to deliver a satisfying conclusion to the series, and we thank all the fans who checked in to the Miramar Playa.”

At the recent TCA press tour, Starz execs had hesitated to announce the cancellation of the series, but instead previewed that the final episodes of the season would provide a number of surprises and potential conclusions for the ongoing story. Much as with previous series (most recently Michael Bay pirate drama ‘Black Sails‘), Starz greenlit the drama straight to series, and ordered a second season prior to airing the first.

Starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan and executive produced by Mitch Glazer, ‘Magic City’ unfolds as a drama set in 1959 Miami, starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan as a hotel magnate and family man who leads a double life and winds up tangled up with the mob. The series also starred Danny Huston, and enlisted James Caan and ‘Caprica’ vet Esai Morales for season 2 arcs.

Well, what say you? Was two seasons long enough a stay in ‘Magic City,’ or did the series have more tricks up its sleeve?
