SALMON, Idaho -- A recreationist floating with a river outfitter drowned on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River on Friday. The United States Department of Agriculture reports the death happened on a stretch of river that runs through the 9,378-acre Papoose Fire area.

That's where several teams of wildland firefighters are currently stationed. Incident personnel reportedly assisted with communications logistics in responding to the death. Deputies with the Lemhi County Sheriff's Department are investigating the  drowning.

Those rafting the Middle Fork of the Salmon are encouraged to check with the US Forest Service at the Flying 'B' Ranch on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River before heading out to the area. Authorities say that's where the newest hazards and camp information are posted.
