Man in Stable Condition after Officer-involved Shooting near Payette

PAYETTE, Idaho (KLIX) – A Harrison man is in stable condition after an officer-involved shooting near Payette.

The incident started about 11:45 p.m. Monday, according to Idaho State police, when 46-year-old Harrison resident David Michael Grant fled from a Payette police officer after the officer tried stopping him for a traffic violation. Grant led the chase to nearby Fruitland, where an officer there deployed spike strips in an attempt to stop him.

Only one tire was damaged by the strip, and Grant continued to flee from officers, heading southbound on U.S. Highway 95 and toward Interstate 84. He entered opposing lanes of traffic and, before coming to the end of the off-ramp, Grant swerved the vehicle and crashed into the guard rail. He then turned around and accelerated back toward the pursuing officers.

According to ISP, Fruitland officer exited his vehicle and gave commands to the suspect. Grant disobeyed and a confrontation ensued, which resulted in the Fruitland officer shooting at the suspect.

Grant’s vehicle continued back onto Highway 95 and stopped near the top of the off-ramp, where officers reached the suspect and began first aid and life-saving measures. Grant, who was the only one in the vehicle, was taken to St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise. He has been listed in stable condition, according to ISP.

ISP is investigating the shooting.

“This is a very serious situation,” Fruitland Police Chief JD Huff said in a prepared statement, “and I can assure the citizens of the city of Fruitland and Payette County that we will work closely with the Idaho State Police to ensure a thorough and complete investigation is conducted.”
